One day we saw a Confederate flag on an SUV in Washington state, and we thought — that’s it! That’s what’s different about politics today. While we weren’t paying attention, the South really did rise again, or at least the kind of thinking behind the Confederacy did.

For the past year, we’ve been on a quest to understand what the Confederates actually thought, to understand American history, especially the Civil War, so we can see if we were right.
